The Westeren Way...
Building a bond with your dog based on mutual trust and respect...developed by Ken Westeren!
Why choose our training system? What makes The Westeren Way different from other methods of dog training?
Both are very good questions! We will take some time here to answer them while providing insight into a remarkable training experience.
First, it is our passion training dogs and their humans. We take great delight when our clients are able to enjoy a calm, enriched partnership with their pet. Along with this passion comes our commitment to give dogs respect for the thinking, reasoning, and loving creatures they are. Additionally, we have endeavored to meet the dog halfway on the learning curve…educating their humans.
It is believed by science that dogs can learn in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 words depending on which research one chooses to believe. This is remarkable all things considered; however when the human element of the equation learns to speak dog, well things really begin to happen in a big way.
The first section of our training system, Education is all about the human learning important facts and skills. These components enhance your ability to read, understand, and communicate with your dog clearly. You also gain insight into how your pet thinks and relates to the world around him and his place in it.

The topics of these installments are:
Savvy leadership
Three states of mind
Understanding body language and vocalizations
The dog psyche and other tid bits
Putting it all together
The next section of our training system, Application is where we put the rubber to the road and begin training in basic obedience.
There are 11 techniques in this section that we have rediscovered and reintroduced to the mainstream because they are so powerful. Over the years working with dogs, I have had the opportunity to learn many techniques from a multitude of sources. Collecting the best of these, I’ve brought back those that have been lost or not used today to their full potential.
The 6 techniques include:
No talk training
No touch training
No leash training
Gestures
Eye tracking
Body language
The techniques we have found to be successful and have added to our training program are:
Drag leash training
Teachable moments
Training with a purpose
Practical rewards
Natural consequences
Some on this list may sound like difficult or advanced techniques, however we present them in a simple, practical manner that's easy to implement.
Combining these elements gives your pet room to think and choose to follow your directions willingly, without using a clicker or treats. Your dog simply wants to do what you ask because you give him the respect to make that choice, and reward him with practical rewards to which he looks forward. This in turn builds your pet’s trust and respect in you as his leader.
Unlike “positive only” training, we understand, like dogs do, that consequences are a natural part of life. Those who practice positive only training are well intentioned; however, life is not positive all the time.

When a puppy plays with her mother respectfully, mom returns in kind. When pup gets a little too rough or oversteps her bounds, mom is quick to give a correction. This is specific to puppies, a juvenile, or adults who act inappropriately. The dog is also reprimanded by the pack leader or those who are higher in the pecking order.
When a puppy or adult is admonished in this way, it is normal. Therefore the offending dog does not take it personally; he simply corrects his behavior and goes on. The correction has not left a negative mark on the animal’s soul, yet the lesson is remembered.
Likewise corrections are given during training; the key word here is correction. This does not imply punishments or scolding, yelling, hitting or any other abusive behaviors!
Often all that a dog needs is what we call a friendly reminder, simply saying Aahh, or Haayy in an authoritative voice is the only correction needed. This, too, does not harm the dog physically or psychologically, but simply brings his attention back to where it needs to be.
The last section of our training system, Rehabilitation will give you the information and tools needed to help your dog regain her balance. If you have a pet that is fearful or aggressive, you will provide the direction needed to break this cycle allowing your dog to be happier and healthier.
Bad habits are addressed and corrected; again allowing you and your pet to move forward in a healthy relationship.
We say our training will change the lives of you and your dog!
This is bold yes but we can say it with confidence because we live it every day with our own pack and through the clients we serve. This is a powerful, life changing experience you have an opportunity in which to participate.
Our training is reminiscent a day when dogs were not only a member of the family, but a contributing member of the family. In fact this contribution was expected and the dog greeted that expectation eagerly and willingly.
No matter the chore on the farm, ranch, or house hold, dogs pulled their weight and then some. Dogs have happily contributed their labor in building our nation and lives, making them all the better for it. The family dog was utilitarian in that they would hunt with their humans to provide dinner for the family, herd the cattle and other farm animals, and it came naturally to these pets to protect their family, property, and anything valued.

This is the premise behind our training, a happy dog is one who not only loves his family but eagerly awaits the chance to be of service and contribute. Of course in our modern society this is problematic, in that dogs are not welcome by society at large in every aspect of life. But this should not detour a savvy dog owner from being creative in how his pet can be incorporated and contribute to the family in as many small ways as are possible.
I love to watch my dogs work! Actually, it gives me chills when my guys are in a field “hunting it up.” They work tirelessly with the vigor and enthusiasm I can only admire; Lord knows it is near impossible to match their gusto when working for me.

One of my guys, Georgia (yes she is a she), loves to be of service in the home as well. She will swiftly pick up dropped items and give them to me with a “was that helpful…did I do good?” smile on her face.
Though we may not be able to match yesteryear, nor want to, we can have a mindset allowing our dog to participate in as much of our lives as is possible, adding their contribution to the family, making it better in their own unique canine way.
